FAQ

  1. What is MXF4mac?

MXF4mac is the name of our MXF product series for the Mac.

  2. Is MXF4mac a company?

No. The company name is Hamburg Pro Audio. We are based in the beautiful city of Hamburg in the north of Germany. If you visit Hamburg don’t miss stopping by.

  3. Hamburg Pro Audio sounds like you’re dealing only with audio?

Using our software should disabuse you.

  4. What is MXF4QT?

MXF4QT is our most exciting product. It’s a so called QuickTime component and it enables QuickTime and QuickTime based applications to import and export MXF.

  5. Is MXF4QT a plug-in for Final Cut Pro?

No. MXF4QT is a QuickTime component. You can call it a plug-in, you can call it an extension but the correct term is component. Final Cut Pro and other Mac OS X applications interface with MXF4QT through QuickTime.

  6. Does MXF4QT convert MXF files to QuickTime files?

No. MXF4QT integrates MXF into QuickTime. We do not convert MXF media and we do not create reference files. Instead we use the real strength of the QuickTime technology. QuickTime is not only a format and not just a media player. QuickTime is an open and expandable multimedia architecture that allows us to integrate MXF in the entire Mac OS X operating system. Both the open Material eXchange Format and the open QuickTime architecture fit pretty well together. Only QuickTime and Mac OS X allow such a system wide media integration with all applications.

  7. Which applications are compatible to your MXF4QT component?

Any Mac OS X application can interface with our MXF4QT component through QuickTime. Check the compatibility list for applications we already tested.

  8. Do I need Final Cut Pro to use MXF4QT?

Basically not but Final Cut Pro installs certain video codecs we use such as IMX or DVCPRO HD.

  9. Do I need software from Avid to use MXF4QT?

We use the codecs included with QuickTime and Final Cut Pro to interpret DV and IMX based MXF media from Avid as this allows realtime effect handling and editing in Final Cut Pro. However you need to download and install Avid’s free LE codecs for Mac OS X once we support other variations like DNxHD.

  10. What do I need to read AVC-Intra from Panasonic P2?

You need to download and install the AVC-I decoder from Panasonic to import AVC-Intra with MXF4QT.

  11. What is the benefit of MXF4QT against other MXF solutions?

    1. We do not convert MXF media to the QuickTime movie file format to save time and disk space.
    2. We provide a QuickTime component so you don’t need additional software to import MXF directly to a broad range of compatible applications.
    3. We provide an universal MXF importer so we are not limited to only read one MXF variation like from Sony XDCAM, Panasonic P2 or others. We read as many variations as possible with only one single solution and we continuously extend the compatibility.
Check the compatibility list and the news section on our website frequently. Customers can also provide MXF media for us to analyze so we can try adding more variations and formats. We never lean back.
    4. We support streaming MXF media. This means our MXF4QT component can access MXF media while it’s being ingested. Ingest includes copy or transfer processes (such as local file transfers, network file transfers or even web based file transfers) and live recording or capturing using MXF ingest servers. Don’t block your system anymore while an ingest is in progress.

  12. Where can I buy MXF4mac products?

MXF4mac products will be available through resellers, directly from us or via our web shop.

  13. Can I install one license on multiple computers?

No. A single user license can only be installed on one single machine. You can contact us for volume and site licensing if you need larger amount of licenses.

  14. How can I test your software without purchasing a license?

You can download the demo version. The demo has no copy protection, no expiring date and can be installed on as many systems as desired. The demo version offers most functions and is limited to only show the first 30 seconds of a MXF clip. The demo version does not support realtime AES3 audio (OP1a D10 files only) editing in Final Cut Pro and our workflow tools (MXF4macCM, P2 Flow, UpdateFCPMedia) are not included.
